Senior Geoscientist, Australian Government, Geoscience Australia
Thomas Bernecker is a sedimentologist/petroleum geologist who holds an MSc from the University of Aachen, Germany and a PhD from Melbourne’s La Trobe University. After teaching undergraduate courses at the University of Melbourne, he spent ten years with the Victorian Department of Primary Industries focussing on the petroleum geology and the hydrocarbon prospectivity of the Gippsland and Otway basins.
In 2007, Thomas joined Geoscience Australia, initially to lead the onshore petroleum program. Since 2009, he manages the Offshore Petroleum Acreage Release project in close cooperation with the Department of Industry. A key aspect of this role is the national and international promotion of exploration opportunities in Australia’s established hydrocarbon producing provinces as well as in the many underexplored offshore frontiers.
